Viator private tours: private, small-group or standard group

Viator sorts its tours into private, small-group and standard groups, and its help center gives a typical size for small-group and standard tours; the limit printed on the listing is the one that counts.

Quick answerViator's help center says small-group tours typically stay under 15 guests and standard tours have 16 or more; on a private tour the per-person rate typically falls as your party grows. The listing decides.

Private, small-group or standard: Viator's definitions

Viator's help center, read on October 13, 2026, says small-group tours typically stay under 15 guests and that standard tours are typically groups of 16 or more. A private tour is booked for your own party, and for private tours the help center says the total stays the same while the per-person figure changes with the group size, typically lower for a bigger group.

Those are typical sizes, not limits: the group-size line on each listing decides.

How it works

What changes with the group type

A small-group or standard tour is priced per person, which Viator's Terms make the default unless a listing says otherwise. A private tour's per-person figure depends on how many of you there are, so a family or a group of friends should enter its real size before comparing it with several seats on a group tour for the same date.

Some listings sell more than one group type. Viator's Louvre Museum Masterpieces Guided Tour with Access describes itself as a small-group or private tour experience depending on the option selected, so the option you pick sets the group.

Examples

Real listings and their group sizes

Viator's Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St Peter's Basilica Guided Tour, from $78.57 per person as read on October 13, 2026, describes itself as a small group experience of 20 guests or fewer, above the help center's typical figure. That is why the listing's own line counts.

On the same date, Viator's Athens page showed the Best of Athens Half Day Private Tour from $48 and its Lisbon page a private 4-hour tuk tuk tour from $85, both with a note that the price varies by group size.

Final check

What to check before booking

Read the group-size line, the option you are buying and the price for your real party size on the date you want. Then read the cancellation line under the booking box: most Viator listings refund in full up to 24 hours before the start, and each listing shows its own policy.

Viator prices and fees explains from-prices, and Viator cancellation policy covers the exceptions.
