What is Viator: a marketplace, not a tour company

Viator is a booking marketplace for tours, day trips and attraction tickets, and it is part of the Tripadvisor Group of Companies. Local operators run the experiences, and your contract is with the operator, not with Viator. Viator, Inc. says on its "How Viator works" page that it provides the platform but not the experience itself; it is a Delaware company with its place of business in Needham, Massachusetts.

Viator's own pages have given different counts of its experiences, from 200,000 and 300,000 to more than 400,000 on its current About page, so we say hundreds of thousands.

Viator's terms call the operator the Supplier and the listing a Product.

How Viator works, from search to ticket

1. Search for a place or activity on the Viator home page.
2. Open a listing. Its booking box shows "From $X per person", then a Date field, a Travelers field and the button "Check Availability". The Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial Tour from Waikiki started from $55.00 per person on October 13, 2026.
3. Pay by card in full, unless the listing offers Reserve Now and Pay Later, which holds a confirmed reservation with a card on file and no upfront payment.
4. Wait for confirmation: the vast majority of experiences confirm immediately, and otherwise it may take up to 48 hours.
5. Receive your ticket. At redemption, present valid photo ID and sign the ticket; some operators also ask for the payment card.

Viator's pages use both ticket and voucher, so we say ticket, and voucher only for an operator's own voucher.

Pickup, meeting point, duration and accessibility on a listing

The pickup time can differ from the start time on the ticket, and you must be at the meeting place at the time communicated on your booking. The Pearl Harbor tour includes pickup and drop-off from Waikiki hotels, while the Vatican and Louvre listings leave hotel pickup out.

A change of pickup place or time is at the operator's discretion, per Viator's Terms; the Viator cancellation policy covers refunds.

Viator and Tripadvisor: one group, combined ratings

Is Viator the same as Tripadvisor? Not as a site. Viator's Terms of Use say it is part of the Tripadvisor Group of Companies, and its About page signs off "A Tripadvisor company". The rating shown on Viator combines reviews submitted on Viator and on Tripadvisor, and a Tripadvisor review needs no Viator booking. Your card statement may name Viator, Tripadvisor or Owl Payments as the payee.
