The Colosseum and the Roman Forum: time slots, ID and hours

  1. Open the Colosseum's official booking site, ticketing.colosseo.it, when sales open 30 days before your visit.
  2. Choose a time slot; entry is not possible without one.
  3. Expect the ticket in the holder's name, and keep an identification document visible with it.

The captured page says the Colosseum opens at 8:30 am and the Roman Forum and Palatine area, in the same park, at 9 am. From October 1 to 24, 2026 last admission is at 5:30 pm and the park closes at 6:30 pm; from October 25, 2026, to February 28, 2027, last admission is at 3:30 pm and it closes at 4:30 pm. It lists closures on December 25, 2026, and January 1, 2027, and free admission on the first Sunday of the month.

The Vatican Museums: the official site and the free Sunday

The Vatican Museums say the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va, and they warn about sites with look-alike domains. The museums are open Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm, with final entry at 6 pm. On the last Sunday of each month entry is free, 9 am to 2 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm. The calendar of 2026 to 2027 closings is a separate page on their site.

Their tariffs page says a ticket is valid only on the day it is issued and cannot be refunded. Visitors must be appropriately dressed: sleeveless or low-cut clothes, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted.

St Peter's Basilica and a guided Vatican visit

One tour operator, City Wonders Ltd, says on its listing that St Peter's Basilica cannot be visited on Wednesday mornings because of the Papal Audiences, that Basilica access for its groups needs the name of every participant in advance, and that the Basilica and the Sistine Chapel can close at short notice for religious ceremonies, with no refunds or discounts then.

If you want a guide for the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica, Viator lists that operator's guided tour from $78.57 per person as read on October 13, 2026, with a full refund up to 24 hours before the start on that listing; the best tour booking sites for Europe list sets Viator beside other sellers. The tour lasts about 3 hours and leaves out hotel pickup and the dome-climb ticket, and its Express options skip the Basilica.

Fitting one booked tour into a Rome day

A traveler who needs only Vatican Museums and Colosseum entry needs no marketplace: both sell on their own official sites, and the Vatican's ticket is not refundable. A traveler who wants a guide, or a refund window, needs a guided tour, which has its own policy and is not the museums' ticket.

Two times are fixed: the Colosseum slot you pick and the meeting time of a guided tour. Viator's page says "On average, this is booked 62 days in advance", a statistic about past bookings, not a rule. Read Viator vs booking direct and Viator cancellation policies before you buy.
