Viator vs Airbnb Experiences: the short answer
Viator and Airbnb Experiences both refund most bookings canceled a day ahead, so the clearest difference is when your card is charged. Airbnb says it charges your payment method as soon as the reservation is confirmed. On Viator listings that offer Reserve Now and Pay Later, which lets you book without paying up front, the payment date is on your booking.
The other difference is who sells the experience. Viator lists tours and tickets run by independent local operators, each named on the listing's "Supplied by" line. Airbnb Experiences are host-run listings inside Airbnb, and Airbnb pays the host after the experience is completed.

On October 13, 2026, Viator's Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Tour with Reserved Ferry Entry, supplied by ExperienceFirst, was from $59.00 per person for 3 to 5 hours. Airbnb's Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Guided Experience was from $64 per guest for 4 hours. The hosts, durations and price bases differ, so the two figures do not rank the sellers.
| Term | Viator | Airbnb Experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island guided | From $59.00 per person, 3 to 5 hours | From $64 per guest, 4 hours |
| Who runs it | An independent operator on the Supplied by line | A host, paid after the experience |
| Cancellation | Full refund up to 24 hours before, on most | Most on a 1-day policy, some on 3 days |
| When you pay | At booking, or later with Reserve Now and Pay Later | As soon as the reservation is confirmed |
| Bad weather | Weather rule not read; declined material change gets a full refund | Poor weather alone is not a refund reason outside the free window |
Cancellation, rescheduling and weather
Viator's home page says you get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before most experiences. The listing's own Cancellation Policy line decides, and some listings are non-refundable. In most cases a booking can be changed up to 24 hours before; Viator's Terms say it charges no fee for a change request that arrives on time, though the operator may, and success is not guaranteed.
Airbnb's help center says most experiences carry a 1-day cancellation policy and select ones 3 days. Inside the free window you can reschedule to any open slot on the host's calendar, though the price can differ on the new date, and Airbnb shows the refund amount before you finalize a cancellation.
On weather, Airbnb says poor weather alone is not a refund reason outside the free window. The Viator pages read do not say what Viator refunds when an operator cancels for weather. Its Terms give a full refund if you decline a material change the operator makes after you buy.
Payment and fees on both
Viator's Terms require full payment by card to book unless the listing says otherwise. Listings with Reserve Now and Pay Later take no deposit, only a one-time authorization of one dollar to validate the card, and the option is not offered within 3 days of travel or more than 12 months out.
Airbnb says it typically charges a 20% service fee on experience reservations; that fee falls on hosts, and no guest-side fee line for experiences was read. Viator quotes each price per person unless a listing says otherwise, and Airbnb's cards say per guest.
Who should pick Viator or Airbnb Experiences
- Airbnb Experiences for a traveler who already books stays on Airbnb and wants to reschedule into any open slot inside the free window.
